aawi IIpana REDD+ among the 50 best conservation projects in Latin America at Premios Verdes

The Yaawi IIpana REDD+ Project was selected as one of the top 50 conservation projects in the Biodiversity category during the 2022 edition of Premios Verdes, an international recognition that highlights environmental initiatives with high social and ecological impact in Latin America.
Located in the department of Guaviare, the project protects 248,046 hectares of tropical rainforest, and is developed under the leadership of communities from the Indigenous Reserves of Morichal Viejo, Santa Rosa, Cerro Cocuy, Santa Cruz, Caño Danta, among others. Its main objective is to reduce the effects of deforestation and forest degradation through a comprehensive approach to sustainable territorial development.

Environmental and social impact in figures
As of 2022, the Yaawi IIpana REDD+ Project succeeded in avoiding the emission of 448,601 tons of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e), contributing significantly to climate change mitigation. Through the commercialization of carbon credits, the project has also driven improvements in the quality of life of more than one thousand people, strengthening processes of indigenous autonomy, community management, and biodiversity conservation.

This distinction at Premios Verdes positions Yaawi IIpana REDD+ as an exemplary initiative at the intersection of climate action, community development, and the protection of strategic ecosystems.
