The Delfines Cupica REDD+ project was awarded first place in the Forests and Flora category at the 2020 Premios Latinoamérica Verde, a continental distinction that recognizes the best social and environmental initiatives aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This recognition highlights the environmental, social, and economic impact achieved by the project in the municipalities of Bahía Solano and Juradó, Chocó, where the efforts of the General Community Council of the Northern Pacific Coast – Los Delfines, the Cupica Community Council, and the company BIOFIX Consultoría S.A.S BIC are brought together.

Forest conservation, carbon reduction, and community-based development
Delfines Cupica REDD+ has succeeded in conserving 103,000 hectares of native forests and avoiding the emission of nearly three million tons of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e), through a carbon credit commercialization strategy in the voluntary market.

Thanks to the resources generated by the project, more than 7,000 people belonging to the community councils have improved their living conditions through programs in education, health, infrastructure, and the strengthening of local capacities.

The award reaffirms the potential of REDD+ projects as tools to simultaneously address the climate crisis, biodiversity conservation, and social justice in biodiverse and vulnerable territories.
