REDD+ PROJECTS DOLPHINS CUPICA AND PALAMEKU KUWEI, AMONG THE 500 BEST IN LATIN AMERICA
Selected by the Awards Latin america Green, these projects are among the top 500 in terms of social and environmental of the region.
Bogota, may 8, 2020. After the application of 2.540 projects, in the end it met the top 500 initiatives, identifying and managing risk in the seventh edition of the Awards Latin america Green, an event which each year showcases the regional proposals more innovative, replicable, and sustainable environmental, social and financially, in 10 categories aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS).
In this opportunity, two projects of Reduction of Emissions of Greenhouse Gases (REDD+), which have been structured by BIOFIX and which are now in the implementation phase, were featured in the ranking of the best.
The first, classified within the 30 finalists, is Dolphins Cupica REDD+, a project located in Bahía Solano and Juradó, Chocó, which aims to conserve 103.022 hectares of native forests, protect 163 species, including the humpback whale, sea turtles and mangroves, it aims to improve the quality of life of over 6,900 people of the area and, to date, has compensated 2.912.143 tCO2e.
Of the hand of the two Community Councils that integrate and propose the project, the Community Council General North Pacific Coast of Chocó “The Dolphins” and the Community Council Cupica, accompanied by Biofix, took out the nomination in the category of Forests and Flora.
The second project selected in the same category is Palameku Kuwei REDD+, led by the town Councils of the Indigenous reserves Rivers Muco and Guarrojo, Rivers Tome and Wéberi, Punta Bandera, San Luis Volume, Emerald, and Valdivia.
Located in the most extensive municipality of Colombia, Cumaribo, Vichada, this project aimed at the conservation of 32.629 hectares that comprise gallery forests and morichal of the Orinoco basin in colombia, and that, to date, has secured 14 species of local fauna and offset 961.827 tCO2e.
