Bogota, July 30, 2020. In a joint work between BIOFIX, the Community Council General North Pacific Coast of Chocó “The Dolphins” and the Community Council Cupica, located in the municipalities of Bahía Solano and Juradó, Chocó, raised DELFINES CUPICA REDD+, a project that has reduced and compensated for nearly three million tons of CO2e, has been preserved of 103,000 hectares of native forests and seeks to improve the quality of life of more than 7,000 people.
This project, currently in the implementation phase, emerged as a solution to social and environmental needs of the north coast of the Pacific, a region that has the levels of multidimensional poverty and unmet basic needs higher in Colombia.
In addition, the deforestation that presents has reached 0.8% per year, putting at risk the food security, territorial governance and ecosystem services provided by forests, humid and very wet tropical of one of the biodiversity hotspot recognised at the global level, which contribute to reducing the vulnerability to the effects of climate change.
The structuring of the project, carried out by BIOFIX, is based on the mechanism of environmental mitigation called REDD+, which seeks to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, based on the framework of the voluntary carbon market created in Colombia, which enables large-scale distributors, traders and users of fossil fuels, to neutralize the impact generated by its economic activities on the environment and apply to not causation of the carbon tax.
Both Community Councils as BIOFIX, proudly celebrated the recognition of being among the top 30 in Latin America.
The main reason for their selection in the category Forests and Flora is the alignment with 13 of the Sustainable Development Goals as: the End of Poverty, Zero Hunger, Health and well-being, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Life of Terrestrial Ecosystems and Climate Action, among others.
The August 22 Awards Latin america Green will announce the final position of the ranking of the 30 best projects in the continent by category, through an awards gala that will be transmitted via streaming on their social networks.
