How to be part of a REDD+Project?
March 5, 2021. To date, BIOFIX has extensive experience in the development of REDD+ Projects. Currently running 9 projects in Colombia, which brings together a total of 24 ethnic communities, divided into 16 Guards Indigenous peoples sikuani, piapoco, puinave and curripaco located in the departments of Vichada, Guainía, and the Guaviare and 8 Tips Community located in the departments of Chocó, Cauca and Valle del Cauca. As well as a mitigation initiative developed by the owners of a private nature.
What is a REDD+project?
REDD+ is a mechanism that is born in the womb of the Framework Convention of the United Nations convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), whose general objective is to contribute to the Reduction of carbon Dioxide emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation. This mechanism seeks to contribute to:
- To mitigate the effects of climate change.
- Preserve and enhance the Environmental Services associated with forests.
- To promote the sustainable management of forests.
- Preserve and promote the sustainable use of biodiversity.
- To improve the quality of life of the communities.
- Promote gender equity.
Three awards to the work of conservation and REDD+projects
PALAMEKU KUWEI REDD+, a project located in Cumaribo, Vichada, and developed in conjunction with the Meetings of the Indigenous reserves Rivers Muco and Guarrojo, Rivers Tome and Wéberi, Punta Bandera, San Luis Volume, Emerald, and Valdivia, it is ranked among the 500 best projects of Latin America in the category of Forests and Flora. Likewise, DELFINES CUPICA REDD+, a project located in Bahía Solano and Juradó, Chocó, aimed at the conservation of 103,000 hectares of rain forest and very humid, developed in conjunction with community councils-General's Northern Pacific Coast of Chocó “The Dolphins” and Cupica, and occupied the first place in the category of Forests and Flora in the same edition. On the other hand, in 2021, the project KALIAWIRI REDD+, developed in the municipality of Cumaribo in the department of Vichada and the town of Inírida in the department of Guainía, it is ranked among the best 500 conservation projects for Awards Latin america Green.

The goal of this project is to protect 358.000 hectares of humid tropical forest that have 7 guards indigenous peoples Sikuani and Piapoco: indigenous reserves Cali, Barranquilla, Concordia, Flower Hat, Chocón, River Siare Ravine Cute, Saracure River Each and Guaco High and Low. Where do you develop your projects?
The projects under the REDD+ mechanism are performed preferably in forested areas increased to 10,000 hectares, which can correspond to unique owners or groups of owners in the same region that they add up to the indicated area.
Met this requirement, we performed a feasibility study on technical and legal grounds, or territories, in order to be able to submit a project proposal which has no cost and it takes approximately a month to run with it.
What are the phases to be part of a REDD+project?
- Feasibility: an analysis of the feasibility of the territory.
- Approach: provide the relevant information related to the REDD+ Projects, their benefits and phases, mechanisms of distribution of benefits, distribution of roles.
- Signing of the Agreements. Which sets out the commitments to follow and be approved by the instances necessary.
- Formulation: we outline the steps and methods in the Project Design Document (PDD)
- Validation: to Audit and approve the methodology of the project as described in the PDD.
- Verification: Verify and approve the methodology of the project as described in the PDD.
- Certification: The project is certified and registered in compliance with the requirements of the different standards (VCS, CCB, etc.)

- Marketing: the sale of certified emission reductions within the framework of the carbon tax, or customers who wish to make voluntary compensation.
- Implementation.
